This workshop held at Instituto Cervantes Bucharest, proposed a celebration of cinema and literature through play and performance, using the flipbook as a vehicle and the library as a vast collection of flipbooks. The participants drew a film and together, created the soundtrack.
As this workshop is carried out in a library, the tutors decided to construct a narrative axis that links abstract animation cinema, literature, and books as objects.
Recitation, oral tradition, grimoires, and magical invocation rituals blended in a collaborative and free performance.
The central theme of this workshop proposed the basic concept of frame-by-frame animation cinema, flipbooks, and their illusion of movement, but understanding the library books as abstract cinema books. The intention was to “translate” or “transcribe” together those books that the tutors believed were suitable for the collective book-film.
Therefore, the book-film was an audiovisual record made from books that the participants invoked and subjectively transcribed together in a ritual based on oral poetic recitals, and the transcription of books from the time before the invention of printing.
The participants recited fragments of the chosen books using gibberish to read aloud (as if they were poets, shamans, or wizards), while simultaneously, others translated or transcribed (as if they were scribes or copyists) subjectively into flipbooks, with eyes closed, adding whatever they deemed fitting: invented words in invented scripts, colours, images, shapes, sounds, etc.
This workshop was a celebration of cinema and literature in their original oral tradition from an abstract perspective.
The workshop tutors were Rafa Castañer and Joaquin Moya.
